OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma House committee is scheduled to convene a legislative study on poverty and its link to incidents of domestic violence in the state.
The study will be conducted on Thursday by the House Human Services Committee. The study was requested by Democratic Rep. Kay Floyd of Oklahoma City, an administrative law judge.
The study will examine the prevalence of poverty in Oklahoma and conditions related to its impact upon families and relationships concerning domestic violence.
The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey estimated in 2010 that nearly half of women in Oklahoma had been the victim of rape, violence or stalking by an intimate partner.
The Violence Policy Center ranks Oklahoma third in the nation, behind South Carolina and Alaska, in the number of women killed by men.
