TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The state's second biggest electricity provider is installing new, digital "smart meters" throughout Tulsa.
American Electric Power-Public Service Co. of Oklahoma plans to change out more than 500,000 dial meters with the new technology statewide by 2016.
The meters will communicate remotely and constantly with the utilty's billing system, eliminating the need for reader visits.
AEP-PSO also says it could benefit customers by giving them real-time, online information about their bills and peak use patterns.
The utility is charging customers more than $3 per month per bill to pay for the installation
Oklahoma City-based OG&E, the state's largest utility, completed its "smart grid" installation program in 2012.
