Tribes Gets Butterfly Grant

"Monarch In May" by Kenneth Dwain Harrelson

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has awarded a nearly $250,000 grant to seven Oklahoma tribes to restore important monarch habitat on tribal lands and create in-state sources of milkweed production.

Recently, the monarch population has plunged from an estimated 1 billion to less than 60 million. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined the decline is due to loss of milkweed and native flowering plants.
