No Misconduct in Teen's Jail Death

Oklahoma County

Officials say an investigation has found no misconduct by employees at the Oklahoma County Jail in the death of a teenage inmate who apparently took his own life.

The Oklahoman reports that Annette Jacobi, director of the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth, told jail officials on Monday that investigators reviewed surveillance videos and other documentation before closing the investigation into the death of 16-year-old John Leroy Daniel Applegate.

Applegate died in May at a hospital after he was found unconscious at the jail on April 23. His death has been ruled a suicide. Applegate had faced charges including rape and assault with a deadly weapon.

Although officials found no misconduct, changes to policies concerning detained juveniles have been recommended including requiring specialized training for staff who work with juveniles.
