Next Time on ATJ: Jimmy Heath, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, and Other Sax Titans

Join us for the next edition of All This Jazz, which kicks off at 10pm local time on Saturday the 22nd, right here on Public Radio 89.5-1.

Each week, ATJ offers two solid hours of (invariably stellar!) modern jazz, both recent and classic, from Monk to The Bad Plus, Mingus to James Farm, Ellington to Ornette, Blossom Dearie to Dave Douglas, and so forth.

This time around, with our show's indefatigable host briefly away on holiday, we'll listen back to a fine program that originally aired in the summer of 2010. Highlights from the theme-driven second hour of this particular show will include "The Drum Thing" by John Coltrane, "Ralph's Piano Waltz" by John Abercrombie, and "The Voice of the Saxophone" by Jimmy Heath (shown here). The last-named piece was written by Heath in honor of the great Coleman Hawkins --- and as you might well have guessed by now, the theme for the latter half of our next All This Jazz will be "Instruments."

So, play on! (And tune in!)
