TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Tulsa's Catholic cathedral will celebrate 100 years this month, making it the oldest church building in the city's downtown area.
The Holy Family Cathedral, at 251 feet tall, towered over every other building in Tulsa until the Mayo Hotel was built in 1923.
The building was dedicated on April 1, 1914 at a cost of $200,000. Some downtown Protestant congregations predate the Holy Family parish, but are in newer buildings.
In 1973, the Diocese of Tulsa was created, and Holy Family became a cathedral, the bishop's church. It houses the cathedral, the chair from which the bishop teaches and exercises authority.
Holy Family has held monthly events over the past year to celebrate the building's centennial and will host other events Saturday and Sunday.
