Classics 4 "Impressionist Variations"
On Saturday, February 16th the OKC Philharmonic, with new music director Alexander Mickelthwate offered Classics 4, the inspiration for the concert rooted in French Impressionism; the program featuring Debussy’s early and beautiful tone poem Printemps and Ravel’s poème chorégraphique La Valse. Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla studied composition in France and was encouraged to find his own musical voice; drawing from his passion for tango. Combining elements of jazz and classical music to create his own unique impressions of his world, the performance of Piazzolla’s concerto for bandoneón and orchestra “Aconcagua” features one of the world's leading bandoneón players Daniel Binelli. And Scene 4 “Clans” from Chickasaw composer Jerod Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’ Fire and Light, written in 2006 rounds out the concert program offering a distinctive and personal impression, rooted in Native American history and culture and features Chickasaw narration and singing.
