An Upcoming Event Here at TU: "The Personal and Political Stakes of Storytelling After War"

On this edition of our program, we speak with Phil Klay, a writer and veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps whose 2014 short-story collection, "Redeployment," won the National Book Award for Fiction. Klay will appear in our community soon as part of a "Creative Writing Celebration" being presented by TU's newly established Creative Writing segment within the Department of English. This two-day celebration will happen today and tomorrow, the 23rd and 24th, and you can learn more about it by calling 918-631-2814. Mr. Klay's address, as we learn on today's ST, will happen in Tyrrell Hall on the TU campus, beginning at 11am on Saturday the 24th; it's entitled "The Personal and Political Stakes of Storytelling After War." Also on our program today, commentator Barry Friedman has a crazy story about a comedian who almost died of a heart attack while in the Bahamas. Only it's not just a story; it's reality...and it was Friedman himself.

Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
