New Cherokee Chief

By KWGS

Tahlequah, OK – The Cherokee Nation has a new chief after all.
In a recount yesterday, challenger Bill John Baker defeated incumbent Chad Smith by more than 250 votes.
"It's a great day for the Cherokee Nation," Baker said.
According to the Election Commission, Baker won with 7,613 votes, while Smith had 7,347, for a difference of 266 votes.
It's the second time in less than a week that results of the race changed. Unofficial results released Sunday showed Baker leading Smith by 11 votes, but when the election commission certified the vote on Monday, Smith led by seven votes.
