Strings for Peace

Strings for Peace

An East/West collaboration of two musical legends: Genius Sarod Maestro Amjad Ali Khan and his two sons Aman and Ayan Ali Bangash with the Multiple Grammy winning guitarist Sharon Isbin.

It was the brainchild of Maestro Amjad Ali Khan to compose music for this collaboration; successfully interweaving the varied musical, spiritual and artistic traditions with mystical beauty, grace and great emotion. The result is sheer genius!

This is a unique collaboration of Indian and Western classical music.
Indian music is a largely oral tradition characterized by long pieces with a lot of improvisation almost like a journey into consciousness. Western music is played by following written notes, is clearly defined with predetermined points of takeoff and landing.

The metal strings of the sarod are played with a coconut shell plectrum with the right hand, and the fingernails on the left hands are used to produce pitch. The guitar has frets for pitches and the long fingernails on the right hand are used to strike the nylon strings. The sound produced by each instrument is different, but the result is a beautiful amalgam of divine music.
So while the Maestro Khan and his sons Amaan and Ayaan have to adhere to predetermined and written scores, Sharon has to add embellishments to her part in Raga style.

This is a true coming together of musicians where you learn to understand, appreciate and respect each other. Much like what we have to do to understand different cultures, races and appreciate and value each other as human beings.

SAPAF has thought long and hard about our inaugural in person program after COVID. I am sure you will enjoy and appreciate our choice of STRINGS FOR PEACE as the FIRST LIVE PROGRAM AFTER COVID.

This is living proof that art transcends all barriers of gender, race, religion and we hope the STRINGS FOR PEACE will be a harbinger of PEACE and GREAT ART for 2023 !
