A $40 million widening project in the I-44 corridor between Riverside Dr. to just east of Peoria Ave. is scheduled to start Tuesday. This is the third of four construction phases for the $360 million I-44 Riverside Dr. to Yale Ave. project. Work in this phase includes:
Widen I-44 from four to six lanes
Replace structurally deficient bridge at Peoria Ave.
Improve entrance and exit ramps at Peoria Ave.
Removal of eastbound I-44 off-ramp to Riverside Dr.
Addition of protected turnarounds at Peoria Ave.
Extension of Arkansas River bridge over Riverside Dr. to accommodate entrance/exit lanes for Peoria Ave.
Construction of soundwalls on the north and south sides of I-44
The I-44 Riverside Dr. to Peoria Ave. project is scheduled to take approximately two years to complete. During the first weeks of the project, short-term lane closures will be announced for surface work on the existing lanes. Additionally, crews will also begin construction on several soundwalls in this corridor.
