Tulsa, OK – Victims and survivors of violent crime are invited to place an ornament on a Christmas tree in honor of a lost loved one. Ornaments will be hung during a dedication ceremony on December 6, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Buddy LaFortune Community Center, 5202 S. Hudson Ave. in Tulsa.
"This Christmas tree lighting ceremony is to remember and honor those lost to violent crime in our community," said Tulsa County District Attorney Tim Harris. "The holidays often are difficult days and a painful reminder of the loss of loved ones to violent crime. It is our hope that survivors may find some small comfort in honoring loved ones and reaching out to others who have suffered a similar senseless loss," Harris said.
The trees will be on display at the community center throughout the holidays. Victims and survivors across northeastern Oklahoma are invited to participate. Those who are unable to attend may mail an ornament to be placed on the tree. After the holidays, ornaments will be stored and placed on the tree again the next season. Mail ornaments to Gayla Stewart, Victim/Witness Coordinator in the U.S. Attorney's Office, 110 W. 7th St., Suite 300, Tulsa, OK 74119. Please include the name of the person that the ornament is to honor.
