Rogers County Sheriff's Candidate Seeks Limited Recount

CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) — An eastern Oklahoma sheriff's candidate has requested a partial recount of the primary election he lost to the incumbent.

Rogers County Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody said that Republican Cole Butler on Thursday petitioned for a hand recount of votes in 11 of 36 precincts to verify the accuracy of the machines.

Incumbent Sheriff Scott Walton unofficially won a second term by a 5,481 to 3,194 vote margin.

Dermody says the recount is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday. District Judge J. Dwayne Steidley will validate the security of the ballots and determine whether the recount will proceed.

Butler says he's not alleging mismanagement or corruption, but says the machines are new.

Walton says he welcomes the recount and believes it will show that he won.
