TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — Citizens of the Cherokee Nation will soon be able to buy a Cherokee Nation license plate no matter where they live in Oklahoma.
The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council approved this week a plan for new car tag compacts with the state of Oklahoma. One compact deals with Cherokee citizens across the state, while another will address citizens within the tribe's 14 counties. Cherokee Chief Bill John Baker and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin plan to sign the compacts Friday at the State Capitol.
Tribal Council Deputy Speaker Chuck Hoskin Jr. says in a news release that this will be the first time Cherokee citizens across the state will be able to have a Cherokee tag. He says the compacts will increase revenue by millions of dollars each year.
