EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — Workers in Edmond are in the process of validating signatures on initiative petitions that seek a ban on electronic signs in the city.
Backers of the ban submitted 1,109 signatures, and workers are now checking the names against an official list of qualified Edmond voters. Proponents need 644 valid signatures for the Edmond City Council to call an election for voters to consider the ban.
In January, the council voted 3-2 to allow electronic-message signs along arterial streets and roads, including Broadway, Edmond Road, Second Street and Interstate 35. City Attorney Steve Murdock says no applications have been filed or approved for the signs so far.
According to The Oklahoman, former Mayors Randel Shadid, Dan O'Neil and Saundra Naifeh oppose the signs and collected the signatures in 90 days.
