Tulsa Grand Jury Hears Testimony from Chief Deputy

File photo

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A grand jury investigating an Oklahoma sheriff's department where a volunteer deputy fatally shot an unarmed man has heard testimony from a top agency official.

Tulsa County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy John Bowman testified Wednesday for about two hours. He declined to comment on what he said during the closed proceedings before the grand jury.

Bowman was reassigned in the shooting fallout and is now in charge of operations at the office.

Robert Bates, who has since left the reserve deputy program, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the April shooting death of Eric Harris.

Bates is a friend of Sheriff Stanley Glanz and made donations to the agency — raising questions about whether Bates received special treatment.

The grand jury is meeting for its ninth day.
