Hanukkah starts tonight, Christmas is fewer than 20 days away — is your shopping done?
If you’re stumped on what to give someone, Metropolitan Environmental Trust Director Graham Brannin is here to help.
"Homemade compost, if you have some, that is an awesome gift," Brannin said. "Giving somebody dirt — how can it get any better than that?"
The M.e.t. has released a top-10 list of green gifts. Homemade compost is on there. Brannin said compost will give the recipient’s plants a boost, and they’ll think of you every time they look at their healthy plants.
If you know a person who already composts their food scraps, they might want some worms.
"They eat it up and it comes out the other end, and the stuff is like gold," Brannin said. "It is high-powered, really good compost. You'll also be able to have fun with your friends showing them all your healthy worms."
The M.e.t. says every ton of food scraps separated from the trash stops 6 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
If you're not into dirt or worms, cashmere is also on the list.
"There's options where you can actually buy such a luxurious item and know that it's being reused and not put in the trash," Brannin said. "So, they can have luxury and feel good about it at the same time."
Some companies online sell winter hats made of recycled cashmere.
The other items on the green gifts list are a drying rack, flip flop doormats, seed packets, gift certificates, experience gifts, museum membership and a philanthropic gift.
