Cigarette Tax Hike Proposed to Fund State Programs

File Photo

Oklahoma Health Commissioner Terry Cline wants to increase the price of a package of cigarette by $1.50. He tells KWGS the tax increase would generate $182-million. He wants that money split three ways.

Cline wants $120-million to be earmarked for teacher salary increases. Insure Oklahoma health care coverage would get $58-million. $3.6 million go to juvenile cancer care and research.

His proposal will be introduced in the legislature next week. It is being sponsored by Grove Republican Doug Cox.
