A Discovery Channel show about illegal street racing won’t be filming on 46th Street North the next two weekends.
The city council unanimously rejected a permit for the company behind "Street Outlaws."
Producer Mo Krishna told the city council the show’s gotten a bad rap recently because of false reports of a death on set.
"We've never had a fatality on our show of any kind," Krishna said. "In fact, any incident that's ever happened on our show has always been taken care of properly, and everybody has walked off on their own two feet."
Councilor David Patrick said he likes the show but it promotes illegal street racing.
"And that's the problem. It gets our local group of racers fired up, and our street racing has went up, like, three or fourfold since your show has come out and actually started filming here in Tulsa," Patrick told Krishna.
"It's a matter of time before somebody gets run completely over, seriously hurt or even killed, and so we're trying to get a handle on drag racing in the City of Tulsa," Patrick said. "If we keep allowing you to film, it shows that we're promoting drag racing."
"Street Outlaws" has had weekend shoots in Tulsa several times.
Although councilors unanimously rejected the production company’s permit application, some said it was not intended as a ban and future applications would be considered.
