Police Say Suspect in Tulsa Woman's Slaying Kills Himself

KWGS News File Photo

Tulsa police say a man suspected of killing a 73-year-old woman on the city's south side killed himself when approached by officers.

Sgt. Dave Walker says 57-year-old Steven Retherford used a handgun believed to have been stolen from the victim to shoot himself in the head Saturday when approached by officers in an apartment complex parking lot.

Walker says a friend of Janet Donovan found Donovan dead about 7:45 p.m. Friday. He says Donavan had trauma to her head and a stab wound and that handguns, jewelry, cash and her vehicle were missing.

Walker says the vehicle was found Friday night and officers saw Retherford getting into it about 1 a.m. Saturday. He says Retherford shot himself when confronted by the officers.
