The entity that manages Oklahoma’s tobacco settlement hires a new leader.
John Woods will start as executive director of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust later this month.
"He is currently the president and CEO of the Norman Chamber of Commerce and previously worked as a policy advisor for the Speaker of the House," said TSET spokeswoman Julie Bisbee. "[He] also has experience with congressional representatives here in Oklahoma, including Tom Cole."
TSET is responsible for investing 75 percent of Oklahoma’s annual tobacco settlement payment. The earnings are used to fund grants and programs to prevent and reduce tobacco use and obesity. Bisbee said the board of directors is focused on fighting cancer and heart disease.
"They have remained committed to that over the life of the organization, and I think they're looking forward to the new perspective Mr. Woods will lend," Bisbee said. "Also, I think his business background — working with chambers and such — will be helpful going forward."
Woods was a unanimous pick from among 58 applicants. Current TSET Executive Tracey Strader will stay on until Jan. 6.
