Shelby May Return to TPD Next Week

Tulsa Police

Betty Shelby was acquitted of manslaughter late Wednesday night in the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, and Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan talked about her future on Thursday morning.

"I know there's going to be questions about Officer Shelby's employment. That is being analyzed right now, as we speak, by city human resources, as well as police human resources and the legal department," Jordan said. "And there should be some result come out of that in the very near future."

The very near future is today.

In a statement, Jordan announced Shelby will return to duty with TPD, but not on patrol. Local activists called for her to be fired, while jurors allegedly sent Jordan a letter asking she simply not be allowed to return to patrol.

Shelby’s attorney, Shannon McMurray, said Shelby plans to be at work Monday.

Shelby has been on unpaid leave since Sept. 22. She fatally shot Terence Crutcher six days prior, saying she feared for her life when Crutcher didn’t follow her orders and she thought he was reaching into his stalled SUV for a gun.
