School Board To Take Up Lee Name

Tulsa Public Schools

The Tulsa School Board tonight hears a proposal to change the name of the Robert E. Lee Elementary School to Council Oak. Lee’s name is offensive to some in the community because of his ties to slavery and the Civil War.

Tulsa School Superintendent Deborah Gist takes issue with those who say re-naming the school is re-writing history. She says the history of the school and the name change will be taught.

Council Oak would be named for the nearby tree where the Creek Nation first met after being removed to Oklahoma in the Trail of Tears.
