Tulsa Public Schools Deputy Director of Activities and Athletics Mick Wilson will take over as athletics director when Gil Cloud retires Wednesday.

Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist announced Wilson as the new athletics director on Tuesday, pending approval by the TPS Board of Education.

"I believe that our students need and deserve a holistic, whole child approach that allows them to pursue their passions on the field, on the stage, or at the podium while meeting a high bar for academic success. Our team looks forward to supporting our schools, students, teachers, coaches and administrators," Wilson said in a statement.

TPS administrators conducted a three-month search for Cloud's successor. Cloud has been TPS athletics director since 2012, capping off a 51-year career in education.

"I am confident Mick is the best and most qualified leader to fill this role and will continue the amazing work that our athletics staff and student athletes are doing," Cloud said in a statement.

Wilson has 31 years of experience in public education, including 12 years working with TPS coaches and physical education staff. Wilson holds an associate’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, a bachelor’s degree in education from Pittsburg State University, and a master’s degree in education from Henderson State University.
