Tulsa police officers are no longer allowed to pay superiors to retire in order to get a promotion.
An executive order from Mayor Dewey Bartlett signed June 6 says employees under the city merit system, which includes police officers, must swear under oath no inducement was accepted or given to receive a promotion.
TPD acknowledged earlier this year several officers have paid their superiors to retire so they can get promoted without having to retake a test. Sheriff Vic Regalado admitted to doing so in 2013 while he was with TPD.
A new promotion and appointment process for TPD will be announced soon. The executive order doesn’t apply to employees of the fire department, city council or auditor.
