Jul 23, 2019

As readers anxiously await the final volume of Hilary Mantel's trilogy on novels on the life of 16th Century royal advisor Thomas Cromwell, we bring you a conversation from December 2018, when Mantel received the Peggy V Helmerich Distinguished Author Award. She talks about her fascination with Cromwell, the advisor and confidant to Cardinal Wolsey and King Henry VIII, as well as her most recent collection of short stories, including her provocative title story, "The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher." Her earlier books on Cromwell, "Wolf Hall" and Bring Out the Dead" both won the Mann Booker Prize, and became the basis for a popular BBC-Masterpiece mini-series starring Mark Rylance. Her final book in the trilogy, "The Mirror and the Light" is due out in March 2020.
