The legendary bassist, bandleader, and composer Charles Mingus would've turned 98 next week; he died in the late 1970s at age 56. On the next All This Jazz, starting at 9pm on Saturday the 18th here on KWGS / Public Radio Tulsa, we’ll highlight several of his outstanding compositions...the well-known as well as the less-familiar, as rendered by a host of jazz greats past and present.
Every Saturday night, both online and over the air, ATJ delivers three hours of recent and classic jazz -- across a wide range of styles -- from 9 o'clock till midnight. From Benny Carter to Benny Goodman, Bill Evans to Bill Charlap, Paul Desmond to Paul Bley, and Chris Connor to Kris Davis, All This Jazz is delighted by modern (and post-modern!) jazz in its many forms, and we love sharing the same with our listeners.
And along with our hour-long tribute to The Music of Mingus, running from 11pm to midnight, we'll air plenty of tunes -- throughout our broadcast -- as performed by Lee Konitz, the (mainly alto) saxophone whiz who died on April 15th of complications from COVID-19. A free-thinking and ever-exploratory giant of modern jazz whose career in music lasted 70+ years, Konitz passed away at 92...and he was still playing and recording frequently before being hospitalized.
