Oklahoma Sees Another 710 New Cases of COVID-19, 8 More Deaths Reported

The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported on Friday 710 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the state's total to 56,260.

Tulsa County had 110 of Friday's reported cases. Its total rose to 12,941. Oklahoma County became the first in the state to surpass 13,000 confirmed cases, adding 170 for a total of 13,144.

The state's seven-day average of new cases, which shows the trend in infections, fell from 702 to 645, its lowest level since July 14.

The seven-day average hit a peak of 1,093 on Aug. 1. When Oklahoma moved to phase three of Gov. Kevin Stitt's reopening plan on June 1, the average was 69 cases.

Tulsa County's seven-day average fell from 137 to 121, its lowest level since July 6. It peaked at 254 on July 30.

The state health department reported on Friday eight new deaths, with one in the past 24 hours. A Pontotoc County woman between 36 and 49 years old was among the deaths, as was an Oklahoma County woman between 50 and 64 years old. The other six deaths were adults 65 or older, including one in Tulsa County.

Since March 18, COVID-19 has officially killed 786 Oklahomans. In Tulsa County, 129 residents have died. Oklahoma County has 153 deaths, most in the state.

As of Thursday evening, 559 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19, seven more than on Wednesday. Of those hospitalized Thursday, 482 had positive coronavirus tests. Overall, 229 Oklahomans hospitalized for COVID-19 were in intensive care units, 18 more than on Wednesday.

The last time fewer than 500 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19 was July 10.

Tulsa County reported 223 residents hospitalized as of Tuesday, down from a new high of 226 on Sunday. Those numbers were lowered after being reported on Thursday. Local hospitalization numbers change frequently based on new data. Tulsa County hospitalizations have been trending up overall since the first week of June.

Over the course of the pandemic, 4,719 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

As of Thursday, the state reported 18% of its adult ICU beds available.

The state health department reported an additional 576 patients as recovered on Friday, bringing the total to 47,762. Patients are considered to have recovered if they did not die, are not currently hospitalized and it has been at least 14 days since their symptoms began. Symptoms have been reported to linger for several weeks for some individuals.

The state has 7,712 active cases of COVID-19, 126 more than the day before. The state broke 8,000 active cases for the first time on Sunday.

Tulsa County reported an additional 117 patients as recovered on Friday, bringing the total to 11,341. The county has 1,471 active cases, eight fewer than the day before.

The state's overall positive test rate on Thursday remained at 7.5%. Out of 10,361 tests reported on Thursday, 10.7% were positive. Each positive test does not necessarily represent a unique individual.

The World Health Organization's benchmark indicating adequate testing is a 5% positive test rate.
