Pandemic Has Created Substitute Teacher Shortage at TPS

Tulsa Public Schools is behind the eight-ball when it comes to available substitute teachers.

"On an average year, we have approximately 400 substitutes wo are active in our system. As of today, we have about 110, 30 of which have come in the last couple of weeks," said TPS Chief Talent Officer Devin Fletcher.

The district has stepped up recruiting with many typical candidates nervous about the COVID-19 pandemic. The district is trying to recruit subs from across the city by going to places like grocery stores, churches and community centers.

"We’re also targeting and specifically looking at college-age students and recent graduates from Tulsa Public Schools as well as other surrounding areas in an effort to support our sub shortage," Fletcher said.

People interested in becoming a substitute teacher can find more information on the TPS website or call 918-746-6310.

The district is also in need of backup bus drivers and custodians.
