Christmas Stamps Are OK; Christmas Carols? Not At The Post Office
When a trio of carolers were asked to leave a post office in Maryland, the whole "war on Christmas" debate had another flashpoint. But USPS isn't exactly anti-Christmas, as its annual holiday stamps show.
How Much Influence Will Iran Have In Iraq?
As U.S. troops depart Iraq, many observers assume the country will fall into lockstep with its powerful Shiite neighbor to the east, Iran. But, at least in the short term, other countries in the region are expected to keep Iran in check, and Turkey is already playing a significant economic role.

Not So Fast, Newt: Gingrich As Polling Phenomenon
We do know that it's a lot easier to tell a pollster you're for somebody than it is to vote for that somebody. The former is theory, the latter is fact. People know when they are going to vote and they get ready. No one knows when or even whether they're going to be polled.

Who's Opposed To .XXX Domain Names? Not Exactly Whom You'd Think
The group selling .xxx addresses online says it makes it easier to identify adult content and block it for children. But that won't happen if adult entertainment companies don't move their sites — and some of them hate the new suffix. If everything is under one domain, they say, it's easier to censor.

Death Sentences Drop To Historic Lows In 2011
A new report says just 78 offenders were handed capital sentences this year, marking the first time in more than three decades that fewer than 100 people were sent to death row. Some experts say Americans are becoming ambivalent or opposed to the death penalty, but others note that may be because there is another option: life without parole.

GOP Tries To Rein In Spending On Jobless Benefits
One of the year-end fights going on in Congress is about unemployment insurance. Democrats want to extend benefits for people who have been out of work for a long time. Republicans say it's time to change the program and lower its cost. The Labor Department estimates that if Congress doesn't act soon, some 2.5 million people could stop receiving checks by March.
