Tulsa, Oklahoma – (Please note: This show originally aired earlier this year.) On this edition of StudioTulsa, we visit with John Wooley, host of the long-running "Swing on This" radio program, which is heard right here on Public Radio 89.5 KWGS-FM every Saturday at 7pm. Wooley's also an accomplished and prolific writer, and today he chats with our host Rich Fisher about two new works of non-fiction that he's just had published in the last few weeks: "Shot in Oklahoma: A Century of Sooner State Cinema" (University of Oklahoma Press) and "Wes Craven: The Man and His Nightmares" (Wiley). The former, as you'd expect, is a thoroughly researched, engagingly rendered history of filmmaking in this state --- from the halcyon days of silent shorts made at the 101 Ranch to Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders," and from "Tulsa" with Susan Hayward to the first straight-to-home-video feature ever made (a movie called "Blood Cult"). Wooley's other new book, a biography of ace horror filmmaker Wes Craven, profiles both the life and career of the man who's given us "The Hills Have Eyes," the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies, and the more recent "Scream" franchise. As Wooley notes on his website about his bio of Craven, in working on this book: "I found myself in a position to write about things that have been kicking around in my head for decades, ideas having to do with the connections between art and exploitation, for instance, as well as what youthful exposure to the concept of an endless, burning hell full of tortured souls might have on a writer or filmmaker."
