Oklahoma City, OK – Democratic Okla. senator to challenge district map
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A state senator is challenging the constitutionality of a Senate redistricting plan that was approved by lawmakers and signed into law by Gov. Mary Fallin.
Democrat Sen. Jim Wilson of Tahlequah scheduled a press conference for Thursday to announce his challenge. He is proposing that a redistricting commission redraw the Senate district boundaries.
The Republican-controlled Senate voted 38-6 for the bill containing the new district lines over the objections of some Democrats that the maps were drawn in secret with the help of a GOP political strategist.
Wilson debated against the measure at the time and complained that "a sober person could not draw this map."
States are required to redraw House and Senate districts each ten years based on the latest U.S. Census data.
