OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — More than three weeks after a deadly tornado ripped through Moore, Gov. Mary Fallin and emergency management officials got an on-the-ground briefing of recovery and cleanup efforts.
Fallin met with city officials Wednesday and took a walking tour of one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in the Oklahoma City suburb. The May 20 twister tore across the city, killing 24 and injuring hundreds.
Two elementary schools that were heavily damaged by the tornado already have been razed, including the Plaza Towers Elementary School where seven children died while taking shelter.
Moore Public Schools spokeswoman Pam Westbrook says the board has not yet awarded contracts on the construction of the new schools, but she says she's confident the new schools will have safe rooms.
