American Airlines will shift work to the Tulsa maintenance plant in an effort to avoid lay-offs.

The company says the Tulsa plant will be used to take delivery of new 737 jets and inspect older MD-80s.

The airline previously projected that 400 layoffs were necessary this year in Tulsa because its newer fleet of aircraft required less maintenance. But the company announced Wednesday that it's making other changes to avoid layoffs in Tulsa this year.

American Airlines is one of Tulsa's largest employers with over 6,000 workers at its Tulsa base.
