OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — An Oklahoma County judge plans to review plans to implement a state Supreme Court ruling that said a Ten Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds is unconstitutional and must be removed.
District Judge Thomas Prince plans to convene a hearing Friday after receiving a mandate from the state's highest court to implement its June 30 decision. The court ruled the monument is a religious symbol and must be removed from the Capitol grounds because it violates a state constitutional ban on using public property for the benefit of religion.
In spite of the order, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt has vowed to continue his fight to keep the monument on the Capitol grounds.
The 6-foot-tall granite monument was authorized by the Legislature in 2009 and was erected in 2012.
