MEDFORD, Okla. (AP) — A pair of earthquakes has rattled the Medford area in Grant County in northern Oklahoma.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquakes were recorded Friday in the same general area. The first was recorded shortly before 8 a.m. about 15 miles west-southwest of Medford. The 2.9 magnitude temblor was recorded at a depth of about three miles.
The second 3.6 magnitude quake was recorded 14 miles west-southwest of Medford. It occurred at 1:12 p.m. at a depth of about six miles.
There were no immediate reports of damage. Geologists say damage is not likely in earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and below.
Studies have concluded that some earthquakes in the state have been induced by the injection of massive amounts of the byproduct of oil and gas production into the earth.
