TU Hosts Forum on Quakes

KWGS News

Around 150 people turned out for a community forum on Oklahoma's rash of earthquakes, Wednesday night in Tulsa. The forum was held on the University of Tulsa campus.

There was discussion on the roll oil and gas drilling could be playing in the number and the increase in magnitude of the quakes. At issue, is whether the practice of waste water injection is causing the enhanced activity.

A large earthquake was recorded on Saturday in north central Oklahoma. It was originally a 5.6 quake. However, the USGS increased the magnitude  on Wednesday to  5.8. That makes it the strongest quake in Oklahoma's recorded history. Centered near the town of Pawnee, the quake caused considerable damage to homes northwest of Pawnee.

Pawnee is about 60 miles north west of Tulsa.
