New TSA Rules on Electronics Coming to Tulsa

Security changes are coming to Tulsa International Airport.

Rules regarding electronics larger than a cell phone announced last summer by the Transportation Security Administration are now being implemented. Travelers will now have to take those items out of bags being carried onto an airplane and put them into a bin for security screening just as they would a laptop computer.

"Tablets, e-readers, things of that nature, anything that's like a medical device — breathing machine, what have you — cameras, we're going to have it sitting with nothing on top of it or nothing under it," said TSA Agent Adrian White.

The new procedure will be fully implemented Monday.

"But passengers are experiencing them now because we've already started rolling it out. It will just be fully implemented the first of next week," said TSA spokeswoman Carrie Harmon.

Not all travelers, however, will have to take electronics out of their carry-on bags.

"The new security procedures regarding large electronics apply to passengers in the standard lane, but they do not apply to PreCheck customers," said

According to the TSA, the change will let agents get a clearer view of bags’ contents through the X-ray machine and speed up screening. Travelers may also be asked to take food out of their carry-on bags.
