Some Counties See Spikes In COVID-19 Cases, Variants Now Count For Half Of Infections

COVID-19 cases are down globally but some regions are seeing spikes.

Dr. Jennifer Clark of OSU’s ECHO Project compared the pockets of infection to smoldering fires.

“It’s one thing to have pockets of smoldering fires, but it’s another thing when smoldering fires kind of come together. Is there going to be a potential for an outbreak? It’s something we’re continuing to watch.”

In Oklahoma, Ottawa County saw a 236% increase in cases between June 7th and June 13th. 37 new cases were identified there.

Okmulgee and Creek counties also saw a jump in cases during the same timeframe. Okmulgee County saw a jump of 14% with 16 news cases; Creek County also had 16 news cases and rose 45%.

Variants also now count for half of infections in Oklahoma.

As of June 6th, the Alpha variant is leading at 311 cases.

The Delta variant, now under worldwide scrutiny for its increased transmissibility, is reportedly still at 30 cases in Oklahoma. This remains unchanged from May 24th, according to data from the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
