Stillwater,OK – Payne County commissioners consider tax proposal

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Payne County commissioners plan to consider setting an election date for a proposal to extend the county's three-eighth cent sales tax for five more years.

The current tax is to expire in 2012 unless voters agree to extend it. The proposal calls for extending the tax until 2018.

The Stillwater NewsPress reports (http://bit.ly/sskSsg ) that county commissioners will consider setting a Feb. 14 election date on the plan when they meet Monday in Stillwater.

Officials say the tax brought in nearly $597,000 in November.

The county uses 53 percent of the tax for highways, 20 percent goes to the county Fair Board, 15 percent to the general fund, 7 percent to the Payne County Extension Office and 5 percent to county fire departments.
