Tulsa, OK – Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire at 167 S. 91st E. Avenue Tuesday night. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, the refueling of an operating kerosene space heater. It only took fire crews about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire and declare the situation under control.
One adult male suffered minor injuries, but refused transport to a medical facility. Power to the house had been disconnected, and the residents were attempting to heat the house with a space heater in the living room. While trying to refuel a small spill onto the operating heater caused the fuel to ignite.
The Tulsa Fire Department would like to remind citizens of the dangers associated with space heaters and generators during the heating season. Never refuel a space heater or generator while it is running or while the engine is still hot. Always allow the engine or heater to cool down for at least 5 minutes to prevent accidental ignition while refueling.
Never operate a non-electric space heater or generator inside the house or garage. The burning of the fuel produces Carbon Monoxide which is colorless, odorless, toxic, and to often can be deadly. If you suspect Carbon Monoxide poisoning, which often presents with flu like symptoms, please call 911 immediately and we will check the levels in your home.
