Tahlequah, OK – Oklahoma tribe distributes $3 million to schools
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) The Cherokee Nation has distributed nearly $3 million to public schools in northeastern Oklahoma.
More than $179,000 was given to Tulsa schools, about $175,212 went to schools in Tahlequah and $109,903 went to Muskogee schools on Monday as part of the tribe's annual Public Schools Appreciation Day.
The tribe enacted a law in 2002 mandating that 38 percent of tax revenue from the sale of Cherokee Nation vehicle tags must go to education.
The funding, given as grants, totaled $2.99 million.
