Cherokee Nation to Provide Limited Supply of Heirloom Seeds

File photo

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — The Cherokee Nation will provide its tribal citizens with a limited supply of heirloom seeds from its inventory.

The tribe has seeds from rare breeds of corn, beans, squash, gourds, Trail of Tears beads and tobacco traditionally used for Cherokee customs.

Tribal citizens are limited to two varieties and can either make an appointment to get the seeds or email the request to seedbank@cherokee.org. A copy of the person's Cherokee Nation tribal citizenship card, proof of age and an address are required.

The tribe will begin dispersing the seeds on Feb. 1.
