Double Semi Crash, Explosion on I-44 Causes Midday Traffic Headache in Tulsa

Incredibly, it appears there are no serious injuries from a crash involving two semis on I-44, both of which erupted in flames.

A truck hauling an oversize load of some sort of storage tank got stuck under the U.S. 169 bridge on the eastbound side of I-44 between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. It seems a second semi carrying a load of tires hit that one, sparking a fiery explosion and sending up black smoke seen for miles.

To top it off, a red Ford pickup escorting the oversize load then crashed into the back of it.

While the crash snarled traffic for hours with highways shut down in all directions, officials said no one involved went to the hospital for their injuries.

Eastbound lanes of I-44 remained closed Thursday afternoon as Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews assessed the bridge over the highway.
