The City is partnering with the Community Service Council’s Tulsa Regional Complete Count Committee and other community leaders to host Census Solutions Workshops in September across Tulsa to serve historically undercounted communities for the upcoming Census.
Earlier this year, Mayor G.T. Bynum and Tulsa City Councilors joined the Community Service Council and Indian Nation Council of Governments to announce the kick-off of the 2020 Census for the Tulsa area.
“We want Tulsans to be aware that the population census is upon us and encourage every resident to participate and be counted to create jobs and increase growth opportunities. The census is the basis of apportionment for everything from seats in Congress to federal aid for local services and infrastructure,” Bynum said. “Funding for highways, school lunch programs, Medicare and Medicaid and other crucial projects and programs worth $600 billion a year are based on census data.”
The Census Solution Workshops will be comprised of community stakeholders that will help form strategies to help underrepresented Tulsans be counted for the Census in April 2020. Workshops will be held in multiple languages.
Census Solutions Workshops are as follows:
- East: Sept. 6, 9:30a.m. -1:15 p.m. with promotoras (community peer advisors; conducted in Spanish) at Martin Regional Library
- West:Sept. 7, noon - 4:15 p.m. at Zarrow Regional Library
- South:Sept. 14, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. with the Burmese community (conducted in the Zomi language) at Far East Mission Church
- North: Sept. 21 with the African American community, exact time and location TBD
