TPS High Schools to Hold Drive-Up Graduations; Citywide Celebration of Class of 2020 Planned Sunday

Tulsa Public Schools

Tulsa Public Schools high schools will host drive-up graduations next week.

The modified celebrations will let students wear their caps and gowns, pick up their diplomas in person, and turn their tassels, things representatives of the class of 2020 said were important to them.

Superintendent Deborah Gist said TPS is still committed to holding in-person ceremonies in July and will make a decision on those in early June so there’s time to plan them.

"Early June will also give us the ability to sort of watch to see what happens with our numbers and whether or not there’s any change after the opening up of the state," Gist said.

TPS will also produce keepsake videos for graduates.

Sunday night at 8:20 — or 20:20 military time — there will be a citywide celebration of graduates.

"For 20 minutes and 20 seconds to celebrate the class of 2020, we will have every field — the lights on in every stadium in the city, and that includes our district stadiums as well as ONEOK Field and University of Tulsa’s stadium," Gist said.

Stadium public address systems will play announcements and congratulations. Gist encouraged Tulsans to go outside and make noise for the class of 2020 at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, too.
