Oklahoma Reaches 800 Reported Coronavirus Deaths

A Cleveland County woman 65 or older is the 800th Oklahoman known to have died from COVID-19.

Hers was the only death reported on Monday by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. She did not die in the past 24 hours.

The health department reported 259 deaths in August. It reported 154 deaths in July, 53 in June, 112 in May, 199 in April and 23 in March.

The health department reported 713 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state's total to 58,733. For the month of August, Oklahoma added 22,246 confirmed cases of the illness. The state added 22,730 cases in July, 10,139 in June, 2,888 in May, 3,053 in April and 565 in March.

Tulsa County had 58 of Monday's reported cases, bringing its total to 13,233.

The state's seven-day average of new cases, which shows the trend in infections, rose from 694 to 744, its highest point since Aug. 11.

The seven-day average hit a peak of 1,093 on Aug. 1. When Oklahoma moved to phase three of Gov. Kevin Stitt's reopening plan on June 1, the average was 69 cases.

Tulsa County's seven-day average fell from 123 to 120, its lowest level since July 5. It peaked at 254 on July 30.

As of Friday evening, 570 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19, 11 more than on Thursday. Of those hospitalized Friday, 494 had positive coronavirus tests. Overall, 214 Oklahomans hospitalized for COVID-19 were in intensive care units, 15 more than on Thursday.

The last time fewer than 500 Oklahomans were hospitalized for COVID-19 was July 10.

Tulsa County reported 233 residents hospitalized as of Friday, a new high. Local hospitalization numbers change frequently based on new data. Tulsa County hospitalizations have been trending up overall since the first week of June.

Over the course of the pandemic, 4,821 Oklahomans have been hospitalized for COVID-19.

As of Sunday, the state reported 19% of its adult ICU beds were available.

The state health department reported an additional 251 patients as recovered on Monday, bringing the total to 49,184. Patients are considered to have recovered if they did not die, are not currently hospitalized and it has been at least 14 days since their symptoms began. Symptoms have been reported to linger for several weeks for some individuals.

The state has 8,749 active cases of COVID-19, 461 more than the day before. The state broke 8,000 active cases for the second time on Saturday.

Tulsa County reported an additional 31 patients as recovered on Monday, bringing the total to 11,589. The county has 1,512 active cases, 27 more than the day before.

The state's overall positive test rate on Friday rose 0.1 percentage points to 7.6%. Out of 8,491 tests reported on Friday, 16.9% were positive. Each positive test does not necessarily represent a unique individual.

The World Health Organization's benchmark indicating adequate testing is a 5% positive test rate.
