Nonstop Flights From Tulsa To DC And Miami Start In November

Tulsa Airport

More direct flights are coming to Tulsa.

American Airlines will start nonstop service to Washington, D.C., on Nov. 2 and to Miami on Nov. 6.

American had flown a weekly Tulsa-Miami route in the past.

The new routes come after American announced new, nonstop service to Phoenix in summer 2020 and Austin last month. Tulsa Airports Improvement Trust Director of Air Service and Marketing Andrew Pierini said traffic is back to 90% of pre-pandemic levels, and Tulsans will need to make the new flights successful before officials can talk about landing new destinations.

"But, you know, in terms of markets that we're constantly talking with all airlines about, we're still going after the New York, Seattle, San Francisco, a lot of those more coastal cities as well, but then, obviously, some closer in, like a Nashville," Pierini said.

The Tulsa Regional Chamber has been banging the drum for more direct flights for years, saying they’re vital to the business community.

"And I'll use the example of the Amazon HQ2 project. A lot of the communities that they looked at were cut largely because of lack of direct flights, size of the airport, et cetera, including the community I used to be at down in Austin," said Senior Vice President of Economic Development Arthur Jackson.

Jackson said more direct flights also helps lure conventions and tourist events, like PGA championships.

The D.C. flights will run every day but Saturday. Miami flights will be on Saturdays. Both will be on 76-passenger Embraer 175 planes. Tickets for the new routes go on sale Monday at AA.com.
