Oklahoma lawmakers significantly boosted funding for crisis pregnancy centers, two years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade. It’s part of a wave of new funding for the mostly religious-affiliated nonprofits in states that have outlawed abortion.

Oklahoma Republicans touted the possibility of a “red wave” at the polls before Tuesday’s general election, but as the final results rolled in, the party’s registration advantage in rural areas and straight-party voting helped the GOP maintain its grip on state government.

State Question 820 will now appear on a special statewide election in 2023 or go before voters in 2024, depending on what Gov. Kevin Stitt or his successor decides. Without any action by the governor, it would appear on the November 2024 ballot.
