Help Available For Handling Updated Child Tax Credit That Offers Families Up To $3,600

Oklahoma Watch

Yesterday was named Child Tax Credit Awareness Day by the Biden administration.

Marcela Swenson, executive director of Tulsa Responds, says the reason is to raise awareness for atax credit the President hopes to see continue.

“I know they want to do this through 2024. Part of the reason they’re doing the awareness day is that so this will gain popularity and continue through the Biden administration.”

The American Rescue Plan has designated that families will get credit payments each month based on the ages of their children. The payments will be between $250-$300 for each child depending on age.

Checks will start on July 15th and run until December 15th. Another portion of money will be given when people file their 2021 taxes for a total payment between $3,000 and $3,600.

Like with stimulus payments, people who have already filed their taxes don’t need to do anything. Those who haven’t filed should consider filing, even if they are exempt from filing because of lower income. Aside from this updated tax credit, there are other credits people may be eligible for.

Swenson said help is available.

“We are here to help. So any hurdle that someone is facing in filing or registering for something, we are here to help them get over those hurdles."

Tulsa Responds works with Goodwill Vita, a program of volunteer tax preparers that will run from July 6th until October 15th.

Swenson said those seeking help can visit tulsaresponds.org/childtaxcreditor can call Tulsa Responds at (918) 900-0918.
